Hellooo, back-to-back music posts. π
When Cocona said she was gonna break idol stereotypes, she wasn’t joking!
My favorite girl group dropped a new single and music video π₯π₯π₯
They went wild on this one, I fear. πΊ
Most comments so far have been very positive. We love to see it! But I’ve seen uwu anime guys perplexed over “what’s special about rhyming words.” Dear sir, who most likely doth not season his chicken, rapping is so much more than just rhyming words…
Anyway, here’s what I liked about the song and video β
Cadence: As in the flow, the delivery. Each section pretty much has a different flow. Also, it sounds like Harvey’s voice isn’t as high-pitched as it used to be. She sounds pretty similar to Jurin to me here. And Cocona is such a standout with her lower tone. There are inflections, the attitude is right. I think Maya was the highlight for me though.
Lyrics: “Find me in Tokyo rapping in a skirt (said like skrt) Are you catchin’ my drift tho.” “Skrt” like the sound a drifting car makes, but it’s also a “skirt.” Tokyo…Drift. I love it. π “Right away, ride the wave, right away, cause we had the right of way” was cool, and I liked Cocona’s whole buss down part.
English: Everyone, except maybe Maya, didn’t grow up speaking English. They’re not fluent in English yet can rap in English without it sounding awkward. For most of the lines, I don’t need subtitles to understand what they’re saying. They’ve gotten even better. I don’t really care if they don’t write their own lyrics because they’re still an idol group, lol. English is their THIRD language.
Color grading, CGI: There’s a lot going on visually. They put together multiple sets, Harvey’s black and white scene, that dark room at the end with the orange lighting. The editing is fast paced, the budget was budgeting. This music video reminded me of GRL GVNG, which I loved.
Styling (the grillz!): Cocona wanting to go bald, getting the OK, then shaving off all her hair in the music video is iconic. Everyone got new hair styles and colors, cool outfits, huge claw-like nails, and grillz with fangs. There’s also the wolf inspired outfits with the ears and furry sleeves.
Consistency, theme: As usual they are “out of this world,” aliens arriving on the planet. They also have a wolf theme that’s heavy both in the lyrics and outfits. Their fans are called “Alphaz” by the way. Alpha wolf myth aside π I like the consistency.
Choreography: There’s not a lot shown in the music video, but everything shown fits the beat and was on point. The little skips just when they let the beat have a breather, and Cocona’s lil move at 3:21 were the highlights for me. I’ve seen the main dance choreography since, and it’s cute!
The beat: It’s so solid that there’s no beat switch is required. It’s mixed properly and the bass is heavy. The girls already give enough with their flows, so to me doing more with the instrumental might have taken away from that. The instrument heard in the intro and throughout the song is apparently a Chinese one called an erhu.
Anyway, some lines that I loved for some reason: Juria’s “Drop a pin or addy, that’s where I’ll go.” Why does it sound like she’s talking about scrapping. π Jurin’s “Told my haters ‘Yo, the more the merrier.'” This whole song sounds like a diss track to their haters (which they do have).
I’m digging the attitude and the choice to go cool instead of cute again. π½Every other girl group out there is already doing cute.
